On the 23 October 2017 the Secretary of State for International Development, the Rt Hon Priti Petel met with representatives of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) High Commissions and British Overseas Territories to discuss the post-impact recovery and reconstruction in the region following the passage of hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Patel who has visited the Caribbean following the recent devastation conveyed condolences on the loss of life and property across the region. As the Head of DFID, she reiterated her agency’s commitment to assisting the region with resource mobilization and reconstruction efforts.
The meeting was reassured by comments made by the Secretary of State following her recent visit to the UN and World Bank that “No small island can reasonably be expected to recover and rebuild from a catastrophic disaster that undermines their entire economy without international support”.
