GUYANA SIGNS MOU TO HOST INTER-AMERICAN TOURISM CONGRESS IN MARCH 2018

Ambassador Riyad Insanally, Permanent Representative of Guyana to the Organization of American States (OAS) and OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the holding of the Twenty-fourth Inter-American Congress of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Tourism, in Georgetown, Guyana, on March 21-22, 2018. The Ambassador signed on behalf of Minister of Business Dominic Gaskin.

At the signing, at OAS Headquarters in Washington, DC, Ambassador Insanally remarked that the hosting of the upcoming Congress would be a historic occasion for Guyana since it would be the first time ever that an OAS Ministerial Meeting would be held in Guyana. He explained that the theme for the Congress, Connecting the Americas through Sustainable Tourism, reaffirms the significance the Government of Guyana attaches to sustainable tourism, given its growing importance to Guyana’s economy; the Government’s efforts to promote sustainable livelihoods and to diversify the economy; and the importance of sustainable tourism to regional development.

The Secretary General, for his part, congratulated the Government of Guyana on its offer to host the Congress and reiterated the support of the OAS Secretariat to ensure the success of the event.

The hosting of the Congress is being coordinated by the Department of Tourism, Ministry of Business, led by Director General Donald Sinclair.
