Today, the Permanent Missions of Guyana, Mozambique, and Switzerland collaborated to convene an expert-level briefing on the inter-relationship between climate change, food insecurity, and conflict.

Experts heard briefings from representatives of the World Food Programme (WFP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the United Nations - Climate Security Mechanism (CSM).

The three briefers emphasized the interlinked nature of the three phenomena based on their experience and the work they have undertaken over the years. They urged coordinated action at the level of the UN based on science and analytics to address this issue. The briefing was convened ahead of the run-up to Guyana’s Open Debate on this topic on 13 February, which it will convene in its capacity as President of the United Nations Security Council in February 2024.
