The Security Council today voted to adopt a resolution which demands all parties to conflicts to respect and protect humanitarian and U.N. personnel as required by international law and to fully comply with their obligations under applicable international human rights and humanitarian law.
The resolution, spearheaded by Switzerland, expresses grave concern at the growing number of attacks and threats against U.N. and humanitarian personnel along with the continuing disregard and violations of international humanitarian law by combatants.
The Council voted 14 in favor for the resolution with permanent member Russia abstaining. Guyana supported the resolution stating that it “is of particular significance at this juncture, when humanitarians are facing increasing risks,” and commended those who have paid the “ultimate price” to save the lives of others.
