The Legal and Treaties Division is charged with advising on matters of international and domestic law and serves as a safeguard to ensure that decisions taken in the advancement of Guyana’s Foreign Policy are legally sound.  The Division advises on the negotiation, acceptance and implementation of regional and international treaties, memoranda of understanding and contracts which the Government of Guyana is or intends to become Party to. It also monitors the implementation of such agreements and works with relevant agencies to ensure that Guyana complies with its obligations.

Further, the Division provides guidance to Guyana’s diplomatic and consular officials at its various diplomatic missions abroad and advises on questions of law raised by diplomatic missions operating in Guyana, particularly as it relates to privileges and immunities.        

The Legal and Treaties Division supports the work of every other department within the Ministry and has oversight of the Re-migration Unit.
