I thank SRSG Ziadeh for her briefing. We also welcome the participation of His Excellency Mr. Marko Djurić, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Serbia and Her Excellency Ms. Donika Gërvalla-Schwarz, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo, in today’s meeting. We have listened carefully to their presentations.

Statement delivered by Her Excellency Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Permanent Representative of Guyana to the UN during the UNSC briefing on UN Peace Operations Heads of Military Components

Thank you, Mr. President,

I commend the French Presidency for organizing this briefing on the vital role of UN Peacekeeping Operations in monitoring ceasefires. This briefing is timely, particularly in light of the Pact of the Future’s emphasis on adapting peacekeeping to meet contemporary challenges and ahead of the Berlin Peacekeeping Ministerial next month.

Statement by Ms. Neishanta Benn, Minister Counsellor, Permanent Mission of Guyana to the UN at the Arria-Formula Meeting on “Harnessing safe, inclusive, trustworthy AI for the maintenance of international peace and security”

Guyana welcomes the convening of this Arria-formula meeting focused on “Harnessing safe, inclusive and trustworthy artificial intelligence for the maintenance of international peace and security”. I thank Mr. Mastrogeorgiou, Dr. Afina and Ms. Scaddan for their briefings.

The artificial intelligence field is rapidly advancing and holds both the potential for sustainable development and significant risks. The opportunities presented by AI must be harnessed, while the risks must be mitigated.

Thank you, Chair, and I thank Sierra Leone for organizing this Arria-Formula Meeting, which Guyana is pleased to co-sponsor along with the other members of the A3+. 

We welcome the opportunity to contribute to this critical discussion on strengthening the arms control measures within UN-sanctions regimes and thank the briefers Mr. Ebo, Ms. de Tessieres, Dr. Chambas and Mr. Joseph for their insightful contributions.

I express appreciation to the delegation of Algeria for requesting this meeting. I also thank Mr. Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Dr. Younes Al-Khatib, President of the Palestine Red

Crescent Society, for their sobering briefings.

At the outset, Guyana offers its sincere condolences to the UN and the PRCS on the loss of staffers in Gaza and to the families of all those who recently died under very tragic circumstances.

1. I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the A3+ members, Algeria, Guyana, Somalia, and my own country, Sierra Leone.

2. We thank Mr. Leonardo Santos Simão, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, for his comprehensive and valuable briefing.

At the outset, I congratulate you on France’s assumption of the Presidency and commend Denmark for a successful Presidency in the month of March.

I thank ASG Msuya and USG Michaud for the briefings and reiterate Guyana’s gratitude to you and your teams for your dedication and for the work you do to alleviate human suffering worldwide.
